Today, I’m offering up this FREE At Home Reading Log Printable in case you are like us and want to keep tracking of reading and other work being done. Simply put, a reading log template is a student-kept record of books they’ve read over a specific period. It’s generally sorted by date, and keeps them accountable for reading on a regular basis. And most likely, your child’s teacher has suggested you either download a reading log template… or provided you with one in your child’s homework folder. If you have to keep homeschool records, a book log can be a great resource to use. You can track what books and how many pages your child is reading throughout the year.
Seeing the list of monthly books grow is encouraging and inspiring. A reading log doesn't have to be all about business, yet the blank lines make it customizable to fit whatever is required of them to track. For example, you can easily fit the title and minutes read into one line.

I would love to down load these but you don’t have june, july, August in the calender for the book logs. When you keep track of the books, you read, you will remember what you read. I can’t tell you how many times I have started to read a book only to discover I had actually read it.

And in doing so, we need to make sure they fully understand what they are reading. I remember being asked to read some of these in high school. They need to appreciate the feeling of turning pages in their fingers. And while that can be a wonderful thing… it is often the one thing standing in the way of raising a society of children with imaginations. That is why you will often see book reports and/or oral presentations at this age . This is usually the case for younger elementary students.

How to use a reading log?
One of the best ways to develop children’s reading skills is to encourage consistent reading. Nightly reading is a great habit to form from a very young age. Try to get younger children to make reading a part of their daily schedule even if it is only a few minutes a day.

The reading log is actually a diary that allows you to take notes and jot down what matters the most when it comes to reading. When you track your reading habits over time you will notice how they evolve. Often, we don’t realize that most of the books we read are similar and we can broaden our horizons. Creating a “books to read” spread sets your reading goals and puts them on paper. When you put your goals on paper, you are more likely to reach them.
